While many Americans are debating the possibility of a 4-day workweek, some are doing the reverse and devoting ever more time (even their nights and Saturdays) to their jobs.
The “996” schedule—working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week—has been around in China’s tech hubs for some time. Now, as the AI arms race intensifies and workers trade perks like ping-pong tables for higher pay, that same relentless schedule is spreading in the US.
