Every few weeks, a new debate about Gen Z in the workplace seems to go viral, whether that’s because they’re navigating a difficult job market or because they’re apparently unemployable (i.e., disengaged, unreliable, or unwilling to commit to traditional workplace expectations).
Data suggests there may be at least some truth behind the growing frustration among employers. In one survey, 93% of Gen Z respondents said they had ghosted at least one interview, and 87% had failed to show up for their first day of work.5
That behavior is part of a broader workplace trend now known as career catfishing. But what exactly is that, and why has it become so closely associated with Gen Z workers?
