When Elon Musk tweeted that “whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about,” his post got tens of thousands of retweets and hundreds of thousands of likes.
A number of famous studies on money and happiness agree with him. One from 1978 found that major positive events (lottery wins) and major negative events (disability-causing accidents) both had surprisingly mild effects on people’s long-term happiness levels, suggesting that happiness is more about a state of mind than your actual life situation.7
The truth of the matter could be more complex than that. In reality, whether money can make someone happier may depend on other factors besides the number in their bank account.
